A Chinese kitchen on East University Avenue since the 1990s
Tsing Tsao Chinese Fast Food, Tsing Tsao East to most of the neighborhood, is the family-run restaurant under the red awning at 2231 E University Ave, Des Moines.
Fast food, the old way
You order at the counter and the kitchen is right behind it. The menu is built around the dishes people keep coming back for: Mongolian Beef, Sesame Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Chinese Festival, Combo Lo Mein, Chicken Fried Rice and the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup.
An All Day Special is a full plate for $11.90 and up: the entree, an egg roll, a crab rangoon, soup and rice. Quart-size entrees feed more than one. Eat in under the lanterns, take it home, or have it delivered around East Des Moines.
The two characters on the sign, 青島, read Qingdao, the port city on China's east coast that the name Tsing Tsao comes from.
There is a second Tsing Tsao on the south side of town, Tsing Tsao South on Fleur Drive, our sister restaurant. This site is for the East location.
